Building Research Establishment (BRE)

BRE is an independent and impartial, research-based consultancy, testing and training organisation, offering expertise in every aspect of the built environment and associated industries. BRE carries out research and applies findings to create products, standards and tools that drive positive change across the built environment. It was set up by government in 1921 as the world’s first built environment research centre, to improve the quality and performance of buildings in the UK. It was privatised in 1997 and is now owned by the BRE Trust which uses profits to fund built environment education and research for the benefit of society.

Below are a number of examples demonstrating their experience in building energy performance.

  • Developed and operate BREEAM certification services, the world’s longest established and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings
  • Operate the BRE Innovation Park to demonstrate low to zero carbon buildings, showcase innovative construction and technologies and provide a test-bed for innovative ideas and products
  • BRE Victorian Terrace refurbishment from a traditional Victorian, ‘hard-to-treat’, solid wall stable block into three energy-efficient terraced homes, offering a living refurbishment research laboratory
  • Developed the Code for Sustainable Homes, which enabled a step change in sustainable building practices for new homes.
